Plants grow to about five feet tall, cure to a medium reddish-brown color, and reportedly has a low nicotine content. Named after the Bafra district in the Samsun Province of Turkey. It was described in 1922 as follows:
It is an old Turkish-type tobacco used historically as a pipe and cigarette blending tobacco variety. Originally sent to us by David Pendergrass from Middle Tennessee, it originated as USDA accession number PI 494146.
