Our original foundation stock was USDA GRIN accession number PI 636248. They noted that their source was from Vaughan’s in 1941. ‘New King’ never enjoyed wide circulation outside of Vaughan’s customer-base, appears to have been dropped by 1945, and is now a relatively rare variety. Each packet contains approximately 20 seeds.

New King
85 days, indeterminate — The vigorous vines of ‘New King’ produce large (up to one pound), pink colored, flattened globe shaped fruit similar in appearance and flavor to ‘Ponderosa‘. Vaughan’s Seed Store introduced ‘New King’ to gardeners in 1928 describing it as follows:
“This striking variety was originated in the Chicago district and is the largest tomato that we know of. It is about the season of Ponderosa, but grows to nearly twice the size. Ripens uniformly from core to outer skin. These features make it an excellent addition to the home garden.“[1]
