Northern California Vegetable Garden Pack

Basil, Genovese
Very easy to grow and produces large, glossy leaves that are perfect for making pesto, adding to salads, or using as a garnish. The plants grow to a height of 18-24 inches and are highly productive, producing a steady supply of fresh basil throughout the growing season.

Maxibel Haricot Vert Bean
Produces slender pods that are 6-8 inches long and have a very tender, delicate texture. Pick frequently for optimal tenderness and yields. Some plants have runners.

Detroit Dark Red Beet
Very tasty fresh out of the garden, it also maintains its taste and texture well after being canned or pickled. Globe shaped, excellent color, sweet, smooth and tender.

Early Purple Sprouting Broccoli
Old English variety, over wintering for spring harvest, produces many secondary shoots with small purple heads for continuous cutting.

Catskill Brussels Sprouts
The 20 to 24 inch tall plants produce heavily. The sprouts are large (up to 1¾ inches), dark-green and firm. Used for fall harvests, it is good fresh or frozen. Developed in 1941.

All Seasons Cabbage
Also known as ‘Vandergaw’, this variety is heat resistant, fine-flavored and produces good, hard heads that are ten inches in diameter, average about 12 pounds and are round but flattened on top. Released in 1886.

Atomic Red Carrot
‘Atomic Red’ carrots are high in the pigment called Lycopene giving them their red color instead of orange. The color gets more intense when cooked. They grow to a nine inch tapered shape.

Snowball Self-Blanching Cauliflower
A snowball-type with leaves that curl in the cool fall weather and cover the head to keep the white color. They do not require tying until the heads are six to eight inches across.

Perpetual Swiss Chard
Leaves are smooth, dark-green in color with fine midribs. It is very vigorous and provides an almost “perpetual” harvest. If you garden in an area with a hot climate, it is a great choice for a continuous supply of tasty summertime greens.

Will’s Early June Sweet Corn
Will’s ‘Early June’, as its name implies, is a very early maturing variety. The plants don’t spend a lot of time growing, typically reaching between two-and-a-half and four feet tall, before they decide to start flowering and producing ears. The ears are four to seven inches long, averaging about six inches, all of them with eight rows of beautiful, tender, sweet, white kernels.

Lemon (Apple) Cucumber
Vigorous and productive. Fruit are crispy white, sweet, and burpless, about the size and color of a lemon, and ripe when it first starts to turn yellow; can be used when green. A very old variety (about 1894).

Muncher Cucumber
Strong, vigorous vines that prolifically produce smooth, tender fruit that reach nine inches in length. Good slicer that does not get bitter and is burpless. Cucumber mosaic virus resistant.

Jarrahdale Winter Squash
Originally from Australia, it is similar to ‘Sweet Meat’. The fruits are wider than they are tall, deeply ribbed, and range in weight from ten to twelve pounds but can reach twenty.

Honeynut Winter Squash
Created as an interspecies cross between butternuts (C. moschata) and buttercups (C. maxima), this interesting cultivar has good levels of resistance to powdery mildew and produces 4-5″ miniature butternuts with dark, extra healthy flesh, with much higher levels of beta carotene and Vitamin A than other squashes. The fruit remains green all the way until ripening to orange in the last couple weeks.

Dwarf Summer Crookneck Squash
Best harvested when the fruit is 5 to 6 inches long, light-yellow, and still tender. Mature size is 8 to 10 inches, orange and warted. The flesh is creamy, white, sweet and mild flavored. Introduced in 1900.

Dark Green Zucchini Summer Squash
Harvest when the fruit is six to eight inches long or still tender. Harvest will be lengthened if you keep picking. As the season gets in full gear, you should have plenty to give away. But if you want the gesture to be appreciated, three small fruits with a couple of tomatoes will be better than a shopping bag full of monster-sized ones!

Ping Tung Long Eggplant
Ping Tung Long Eggplant is a popular variety of eggplant that is known for its long and slender shape and tender, mild flavor. Originally from Taiwan.

Bok Choy (Pak Choi)
Plant indoors 5 weeks prior to your last expected frost date. Sow at a depth of about ¼ inch keeping moist until the seedlings appear. Use as much light as possible, watering as required. Before transplanting, the seedlings should be acclimated to the outdoors. Do this about two weeks before you expect to transplant by moving outside into the shade and then return indoors at night. Expose the plants to more direct sunlight every day. Check moisture regularly. Transplant 16 inches apart in rows spaced 24 inches.

Dwarf Blue Curled Scotch Kale (Vates)
The leaves are finely curled, bluish green, low growing at twelve to fifteen inches tall with a spread of twenty four to thirty inches. It stands well and is hardy.

Early Purple Vienna Kohlrabi
A standard home garden and market variety, the skin of the bulbs have a purplish hue and the flesh is greenish-white. These are best enjoyed when they are 2 to 2-½ inches in diameter, before they become tough.

All The Year Round Butterhead Lettuce
Medium-sized heads stay firm and solid even in hot weather. Can be sown in most locations from about March through August for a nearly “year-round” harvest periods. It does well in both hot and cooler locations.

Gourmet Salad Lettuce Mix
A perfect mix of diverse open-pollinated varieties of lettuce. Reds, greens, chartreuse, and more. Highly ornamental, and delicious, of course. As with other lettuces, this is best grown during the cool season, in early springtime or as a fall crop.

Canary Yellow Melon
The plants are vigorous producing pear-shaped, four to six pound fruit that have tough, bright light-yellow skin that is slightly wrinkled with sweet, pale green flesh. A popular old European variety, they are a very late maturing melon that keeps well into winter.

Yellow Sweet Spanish Onion
Extra large (up to six inch) globe shaped onion. The skin is a straw color and the flesh is white. It has a popular mild and sweet flavor. ‘Yellow Sweet Spanish’ is an indeterminate variety that reportedly does well in long day regions and stores well.

Italian Parsley
Plants have deeply cut, dark green leaves with a rich, strong flavor; generally stronger in flavor than the curled types. Excellent for flavoring. Parsley has been cultivated for centuries and is used as a garnish, palate cleanser, flavoring in soups, salads, as a seasoning in other recipes, and medicinally.

Oregon Giant Snow Pea
Plants grow to 3 feet tall, start producing early and continue for a long time. Very productive. Pods are flat, 4½ to five inches long, and sweet. Disease resistant. Developed by Dr. Baggett of Oregon State Univ. Released in 1991.

Golden California Wonder Bell Pepper
The plants are upright, strong, and produce 4 or 5 fruits that are mostly four-lobed, blocky, and 4 by 4½ inches with thick flesh that is mild and sweet. The skin is a bright gold, changing to orange-red when mature.

Tabasco Hot Pepper
90 days. Tabasco Hot Pepper is a popular and spicy variety of chili pepper that is commonly used in hot sauces and spicy dishes. These peppers grow to be small and slender, typically measuring around 1-2 inches in length.

Pink Beauty Radish
The round globes of ‘Pink Beauty’ can grow large but still remain crisp, mild and not pithy. The flesh is bright white while the skin is an attractive pink color that makes it an interesting addition to a tossed salad or vegetable platter.

Giant Winter (Gigante d’Inverno) Spinach
Produces large, smooth, semi-savoyed leaves, that are medium-green in color. This variety was specifically bred to be tolerant of cold temperatures, which allows it to be sown in late summer or autumn for an early spring harvest. It can also be planted at the same time as other spinach varieties.

Sunflower, Giant Greystripe
Planting Instructions: Sunflowers are very easy to grow and because of their size, quite spectacular for a child’s garden. Sow directly outdoors, ¾ inches deep. Thin the plants at first to 8 inches and then to two feet to avoid crowding. (We have had good luck transplanting) Water regularly and weed between the plants to eliminate competition. Fred’s Tie Dye Tomato
75 days, dwarf — Rugose, regular leaf dwarf plants. They are vigorous and productive with fruits that are medium sized (5-6oz average), round, purple with jagged gold and green stripes and the deep crimson flesh of black tomatoes. Has a rich, intense, balanced flavor.

Dwarf Eagle Smiley Tomato
60 days, dwarf — Extremely productive, rugose, regular leaf plants reach 5-feet tall. Bright to golden-yellow, 1oz, globe-shaped fruit that are borne in clusters of 8 to 10 tomatoes.

Purple Top White Globe Turnip
Round roots that are bright purple on the upper part and white below. The globes grow four to five inches in diameter but are best when harvested a little smaller.
